10/12/2020 Mac Os X Unable To Unmount Volume For Repair
Oct 04, 2011 I have a Western Digital 500gb external hard drive, with 2 partitions, 'KAINARC' and 'JUNGLEMAC', connected to my Intelmac (Tiger 10.4.11 via my firewire, i have connected via usb but the problem is still the same). I may have shut down the drive improperly to cause this situation. Jan 17, 2018 I am attempting to upgrade from macOS 10.12.6 to 10.13 on a Mac Pro 5,1. I am receiving Unable to Unmount Volume for Repair errors. I have attempted to install this from a USB installer, running the DMG file from the /Applications folder, as well as an alternate disk. All attempts went to the Macintosh HD volume.
Disk Utility User Guide
Disk Utility can fix certain disk problems—for example, multiple apps quit unexpectedly, a file is corrupted, an external device doesn’t work properly, or your computer won’t start up. Disk Utility can’t detect or repair all problems that a disk may have.

If you run First Aid on a disk, Disk Utility checks the partition maps on the disk and performs some additional checks, and then checks each volume. If you run First Aid on a volume, Disk Utility verifies all the contents of that volume only.
If your Mac has a Fusion Drive and you see a flashing question mark or alert, see the troubleshooting section of the Apple Support article About Fusion Drive, a storage option for some Mac computers.
If you continue to have problems with your disk or it can’t be repaired, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced. For information about servicing your Mac, see Find out how to service or repair your Mac.

My last back-up in Time Capsule was 8 April 2015. Since then I installed an iTunes update (10 April) and and OS X Yosemite update (17 April). Time Capsule is either very slow in 'preparing' or aborts just before finishing its major back-up. I have used the verification of Disk Utility which was extremely slow and took some 24 hours and then told me to 'repair' the Time Capsule disk. Unfortunately, the 'repair' option aborts quite quickly telling that it was 'unable to unmount the volume for repair'.
